Kathy lives in humble conditions with her mother and her rebellious older brother Danilo on the rural Chilean coast. Her father is noticeably absent from her life; he is in and out of jail and continually breaks his promises to change. Kathy experiences moments of hope that her family may live together happily after her father is released from jail, but she soon witnesses the disintegration of her dreams. One by one, each family member abandons her in his or her own way until, finally, she is left on her own. She finds temporary solace in Chemo, a newcomer to town with whom she develops a tender relationship and explores her budding sexuality. But Kathy eventually realizes that her journey must be a solitary one.
